A great exercise in Tim Buckley's confessional, guilt-ridden lyric style of the later period of his career, "Sweet Surrender is also a marriage of funk, rock, and psychedelic styles. How Buckley re-emerged in 1972 as a funkmeister is truly odd in itself, yet the sense of eroticism here is quite beguiling. Probably more "produced" than many of his recordings, this song features a gorgeous, steely string arrangement that compares with some of the later-'70s disco records. Odd but indispensable for fans of the artist, it is available on the exquisite Morning Glory anthology.
