The opening song to Tim Buckley's self-titled debut album, "Wings" is a song and recording that clearly belies Buckley's youth (17 years old) at the time of writing. A graceful, simple, but insightful pop statement, "Wings" sounds as though it could have been a hit record by almost any capable pop/rock outfit from the 1966 period. Utilizing a cross between a first- and third-person account of a love affair, the elegant melody is the basis for Buckley's tale of melancholy. A very Los Angeles-sounding record, the recording's string arrangement is an early, independent effort by the now legendary Jack Nitzsche.
