Written circa 1968 but not recorded in the studio until 1970, "Song to the Siren" made its debut in the last episode of the Monkees' television series the year it was written. An interesting period piece, it collects the best from Tim Buckley's psychedelic period of Goodbye and Hello and the even more eclectic and experimental Lorca from 1969. A tender love song on the surface, the recording is treated with some interesting psychedelic touches, particularly the electric guitar and the wailing background chorus. Melodically, it's one of Buckley's most loose efforts, but the lack of construction makes this song even more intriguing. Both the studio and live Monkees versions are available on Morning Glory.
